The maritime sector is integral to the Liverpool City Region economy, covering industries such as ports, shipping, marine engineering and scientific research, leisure marine, and maritime business services. Recent reports highlight the sector's significant contributions in terms of business turnover, Gross Value Added (GVA), employment, and exports.
Liverpool John Moores University is recognised internationally for its long-standing maritime excellence and expertise, and its contributions to the industry worldwide. Our recently launched Global Centre for Maritime Innovation will provide new opportunities for collaboration and engagement between academics, external partners and the wider industry to deliver impactful research, education and training.
In 2022, Maritime UK and Mersey Maritime commissioned an independent assessment of the economic contribution of the maritime sector in the Liverpool City Region and wider UK economy. This followed in 2023 with a further assessment commissioned by the Port City Innovation Hub and Wirral Borough Council to assess the economic impact of the sector and make recommendations to inform future activity. Through targeted stakeholder engagement, it also captured the opportunities and challenges of the sector.
Given the importance of the sector to the city region economy and the university's work with the maritime industry, we are keen to have an up-to-date assessment of the economic contribution of the sector, key changes since the last report in 2023 and recommendations for future action.
