Introduction
The Government of Jordan represented by the Ministry of Environment signed the MINAMATA’s binding treaty on Mercury and its compounds on 10 October 2013 and ratified the convention on 12 November 2015. The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury. A Mercury Initial Assessment has been undertaken to enable the Government to determine the national requirements and needs for the implementation of the Minamata Convention and establish a sound foundation to undertake future work towards implementing convention provisions. Jordan is committed to reducing mercury pollution and ensuring the environmentally sound management of mercury-containing waste in alignment with the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Households are a significant source of mercury-containing waste, such as fluorescent lamps, batteries, and thermometers. However, data on the quantities and disposal practices of such waste are limited. Jordan’s Minamata Initial Assessment (MIA) identified the country's priorities and main challenges for the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The environmentally sound management of mercury-containing wastes and the reduction of use of mercury-containing products emerged as priority issues. The MIA also shed light on the challenges related to the country's ability to implement the Minamata Convention. According to the MIA report, large quantities of mercury-containing products are present in Jordan, many of which found in household, commercial, governmental, and administrative sectors, such as light sources, thermometers, some cosmetics, etc.

To establish a baseline of mercury-containing waste generated by households and test the effectiveness of a community-based collection program for the safe disposal of such waste.
